Integrating Obi Cloth Unity into your project moves your cloth simulation from basic vertex-shifting to a robust, particle-based physics model. Running 6.0.1, Obi leverages the Burst compiler and C# Job System to distribute physics calculations across multiple CPU cores, or optionally offloads them to the GPU via Compute Shaders. This allows for complex interactions, such as tearable fabric or two-way coupling with rigid bodies, which the native Unity Cloth component simply cannot handle effectively.
Integration Tips
- Install the Burst, Jobs, and Mathematics packages via the Package Manager before importing Obi; the asset relies on these for its multi-threaded solver.
- When setting up character clothing, use the Obi Skin Map to bind high-poly visual meshes to lower-resolution simulation proxies. This significantly reduces the overhead on the solver while maintaining visual fidelity.
- Adjust your Solver Iterations carefully. Increasing substeps improves stability and reduces ‘jitter’ in high-velocity movements, but it scales the CPU cost linearly.
- For complex scenes, use the Distance Field (SDF) colliders instead of standard Mesh Colliders for more robust and faster collision detection with the cloth particles.
